2023: Highest spender will win, not best candidate

Image
ADO EKITI- Nigeria's legal icon Afe Babalola (SAN) has raised fears that the coming presidential election will be won by the highest spender and not the best among the candidates. Babalola at a media briefing in Ado Ekiti stressed that the 2023 general elections will be conducted under the 1999 constitution against his advice saying the poll will only reinstate those who have brought Nigeria to a pitiful situation. “It is not who can make a difference that will win this election, I repeat, it is not the person who has all it takes – age, health, education, and patriotism, that will win the election; the winner of this election I can bet it, is going to be the person who has made money in this country. “It is the person who has the money that will win,” the legal icon buttressed. In his opinion, the recent endorsement of Peter Obi of the Labour Party by former President Olusegun Obasanjo does not factor in the role money bags will play in the election. Former Pope Benedict XVI has died, age 95

Image
Former pope Benedict XVI has died at the age of 95, the Vatican announced Saturday, almost a decade after he became the first priest to resign in six centuries. “With sorrow I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican,” Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said in a statement. The German pope emeritus, whose birth name was Joseph Ratzinger, had been living a quiet life in a former convent inside the Vatican grounds since his shock decision to step down in February 2013. His health had been declining for a long time, but the Vatican revealed on Wednesday that his situation had worsened, while his successor Pope Francis called for Catholics worldwide to pray for him. His death brings to an end an unprecedented situation in which two “men in white” — Benedict and Francis — had co-existed within the walls of the tiny city state. While there is no rulebook for former popes, Benedict’s funeral is expected to be at the...
