Equatorial Guinea Imposes WhatsApp Restrictions Amid Scandal
Baltasar Engonga
The Government of Equatorial Guinea has imposed restrictions on its citizens’ use of WhatsApp, limiting the ability to download and share multimedia files via mobile data. This move follows guidelines issued to telecommunications providers, urging them to block access to inappropriate content.
The restrictions come after Baltasar Engonga, the Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), became embroiled in a sex scandal. The 54-year-old economist, who is under investigation for fraud, had his home and office searched by ANIF officials, uncovering over 400 videos that reportedly show him engaging in sexual acts with the wives of prominent individuals. The footage, which includes encounters with high-profile figures such as the sister of the President, the wife of the Director General of Police, and several ministers' wives, was allegedly recorded with the participants' consent and has since been leaked online, causing a media frenzy.
In a recent report by local news outlet *Ahora EG*, citizens have expressed frustration over their inability to share photos, videos, and audio via mobile data. As a result, users are now forced to rely solely on WiFi networks to share multimedia content.
One source quoted by the platform questioned the fairness of the restrictions: "Should an entire country suffer because of the actions of a few? The decision to restrict such essential communication functions seems disproportionate and punitive. It is affecting thousands of users who rely on these platforms for both personal and professional purposes."
The report also noted that the restriction has sparked debate among the population, with many viewing the measure as more focused on control than on facilitating communication. There has been no official explanation from the government regarding the reasons behind the restrictions or how long they will last.
Earlier, Vice President Teddy Nguema announced plans to install surveillance cameras in all state offices as part of efforts to enforce public service laws and address misconduct among government officials.
Meanwhile, Baltasar Engonga, has been arrested for allegedly having extramarital relationships with the sister of the country’s president and the wives of notable people.
