Mexican Mayor Murdered Days After Taking Office
Alejandro Arcos, the recently elected mayor of Chilpancingo, was found murdered on Sunday, just six days after he took office, amid a surge of violence linked to drug cartel activity in the region.
The tragedy follows the recent killing of Francisco Tapia, the city’s new secretary, who was also shot and killed shortly after Arcos began his term. Guerrero’s state governor, Evelyn Salgado, expressed sorrow, stating that the violence “fills us with indignation,” as the community now mourns the loss of two officials in under a week.
While authorities have not yet provided information on suspects or motives, Guerrero, known for its coastal location and drug cartel influence, has long been plagued by violent power struggles between rival gangs, such as the Ardillos and Tlacos. Chilpancingo, home to around 280,000 residents, has often been at the heart of these turf wars.
Before his death, Arcos had been focused on aiding disaster relief following last month’s Hurricane John. His social media showed him meeting with local workers and residents on the day he was killed.
Senator Alejandro Moreno called Arcos and Tapia “dedicated young officials” and urged the federal government to oversee the investigation, highlighting Guerrero’s ongoing struggles with lawlessness. Arcos’s party, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), condemned the violence and demanded justice, stating that the people of Guerrero deserve to live without fear.
Political violence in Mexico has intensified, especially around elections, with at least six candidates killed in the lead-up to the June 2 elections. Since the government’s crackdown on drug cartels began in 2006, over 450,000 people have been murdered, and thousands remain missing as violence continues to devastate the country.
