Why Inter Milan & AC Milan Turned Down San Siro Renovation Plan
Inter and AC Milan have turned down the proposal to renovate the historic San Siro stadium, according to Milan's city mayor, Giuseppe Sala.
Following a meeting with officials from both clubs, Sala announced that the teams had rejected the plan put forward by the construction group WeBuild. The clubs concluded that the renovation project was not financially feasible and expressed their desire to pursue alternative options.
Both Inter and AC Milan, who have each won European titles multiple times, are seeking to increase their commercial revenue and are considering relocating from the San Siro, which is owned by the city of Milan. The San Siro, officially known as the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, has a seating capacity of 80,000 but no longer meets the clubs' needs.
Earlier this year, AC Milan acquired land in San Donato Milanese, southeast of Milan, as part of their plan to move away from the San Siro. Inter is exploring options in Rozzano and Assago, south of Milan, and has also considered former industrial land in Sesto San Giovanni.
The San Siro is scheduled to host the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics in 2026 and is also in line to stage the 2027 Champions League final, though its future remains uncertain amid ongoing discussions.
