Nigeria has not yet become the nation Chief Obafemi Awolowo envisioned - Dr. Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu
Nigeria has not yet become the nation Chief Obafemi Awolowo envisioned, according to his daughter, Dr. Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu.
In a recent appearance on the live talk show *State Affairs* with radio presenter Edmund Obilo, she spoke on her father's legacy and his dream of a united yet decentralized Nigeria.
She described Awolowo as a staunch federalist who remained dedicated to a strong, unified Nigeria and opposed secession. She also praised her late mother, Mrs. Hannah Awolowo, for her supportive role and effective strategies in their family life.
Awolowo-Dosunmu noted that although Awolowo proposed a clause in the independence constitution for regional opt-out, it was opposed and did not succeed. She emphasized that her father’s efforts were sincere and that he remained committed to his principles until his passing.
Disappointed with the current state of Nigeria, she believes the country is still far from Awolowo's ideal, which promised equal opportunities in life, education, and infrastructure. However, she remains hopeful for future progress.
She also highlighted her own contributions, including her involvement in the National Conference in 2014 and her advocacy for a true federal republic with greater autonomy for regions. She proposed reducing the number of federating units and returning to a parliamentary system for better accountability and cost efficiency.
Dr. Awolowo-Dosunmu concluded by underscoring her commitment to upholding her father's legacy and called for a renewed focus on Awolowo’s vision for justice, equity, and progress in Nigeria.
