Nigerian Politics Poses Severe Risks for Women -Senator Natasha

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has noted Nigerian politics as exceedingly dangerous for women. Speaking at the ECOWAS Female Parliament Association's event on Monday, she identified the difficulties faced by women due to the high costs and financial imbalances in Nigerian politics, which often put women at a disadvantage compared to their male counterparts.
“Politics in Nigeria is extremely dangerous for women. The environment is harsh, and it forces women, who are naturally nurturing, to become unusually tough. This toughness is not ideal,” Akpoti-Uduaghan said. She shared that her own political journey has hardened her, noting that despite her resilience, she still strives to maintain her core values despite the adversities she faces.
The senator discussed the financial burdens of running for office in Nigeria and her motivation to bring democratic benefits to her constituents. She also reflected on her decision to enter politics in 2018, the personal sacrifices she has made, and the physical and emotional toll it has taken on her.
Akpoti-Uduaghan advocated for a less costly electoral process and expressed interest in exploring Liberia's independent candidature system as a possible solution. She addressed the dignity issues and cultural barriers women face in Nigerian politics and called for supportive behavior from male leaders.
She also advised women to carefully prepare their political strategies and avoid overpromising during campaigns. Additionally, she mentioned her collaboration with Senator Ireti Kingibe on a bill aimed at achieving 45 percent women representation.
