Lagos Warns Against Driving Without Visible Number Plates, Says Vehicles Risk Impoundment
The Lagos State Government has issued a warning that motorists using improper or covered number plates will face fines or vehicle impoundment. This measure aims to enhance security and enforce traffic laws under sections 15 and 16 of the State’s Transport Reform Law (TSRL 2018).
Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, emphasized that these actions breach traffic laws and pose public safety risks. The government urges compliance, reminding motorists that driving without visible number plates complicates law enforcement and vehicle identification in criminal activities.
In addition, the Nigeria Police Force says that covering a vehicle's license plate without a valid reason is a criminal offense, and that registration numbers should be visible at all times. However, “pennant officers” and heads of three arms of government – executive, legislature and judiciary – are exempted , they may use pennants or flags on their official cars.
