Falana: Every State Can Afford to Pay New Minimum Wage

Renowned legal practitioner and rights activist, Femi Falana, has stated that all states can afford to pay the minimum wage.
Appearing on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Falana emphasized that states failing to comply would be taken to court.
He said, “There is no state in Nigeria today that cannot pay more than the minimum wage because the government removed fuel subsidy last year, and President Tinubu assured Nigerians that the money saved from this policy would be utilized.
“Any state government or employer that does not pay the national minimum wage will face legal action. Our law firm and the labor unions have agreed not to tolerate the non-payment of wages. Defaulters will be dragged to court.
“We will ensure compliance with the law, including seeking court orders to deduct workers’ wages directly from the source in Abuja. We cannot continue this way.”
This statement comes in the context of the federal government’s agreement with organized labor over the payment of a new national minimum wage for workers.
Labor unions, which had embarked on an indefinite strike, called it off on Tuesday following successful negotiations and an agreement.
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) had demanded a new minimum wage of N464,000, while the government proposed N60,000.
