Iran Denies Criminality In Raisi Helicopter Crash
President Ebrahim Raisi
Iran’s military has not discovered any signs of criminal activity in the helicopter crash that resulted in the death of President Ebrahim Raisi and seven others, as per state media reports. The 63-year-old passed away on Sunday when his helicopter crashed in the mountainous northwest while returning from a dam inauguration near the border with Azerbaijan.
A preliminary report from the general staff of the armed forces, released by the official IRNA news agency on Thursday, stated that no evidence of bullet holes or similar impacts was found on the helicopter wreckage. The report clarified that the helicopter caught fire upon hitting an elevated area and that no suspicious communication was noted between the watchtower and the flight crew.
The report highlighted that Raisi’s helicopter was following a predetermined route and had not deviated from its designated flight path before the accident. Iranian drones located the helicopter wreckage early Monday, but search and rescue efforts were impeded by the region's complexity, fog, and low temperatures.
The military mentioned that further investigation is necessary, promising to disclose additional details later. Raisi was laid to rest in Mashhad on Thursday, concluding several days of funeral ceremonies across major Iranian cities. Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, also killed in the crash, was buried on the same day in Shahre Ray.
