Nigeria: Kaduna State Government Vows To Castrate Child Rapists
The Kaduna State Government has said male rapists will be subjected to surgical castration as punishment while female rapists will undergo bilateral salpingectomy.
The state Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development, Hajiya Rabi Salisu in a press conference on Thursday stated this after a meeting with stakeholders organised by the ministry in collaboration with the Centre for Integrated Health Programs (CIHP).
The commissioner pointed out that the punitive measures were contained under the Kaduna State Government Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law (VAPPL), 2018.
According to her, the law followed a lengthy process of advocacy, lobbying and awareness raised by civil society organizations in the state in collaboration with relevant government agencies, Daily Trust reports.
Also speaking, Dr. Austin Azihaiwe, the state Technical Lead for CIHP said the day marked 16-day activism against GBV, which was also referred to as the ‘Orange the World’ Campaign and began in 1991.
He said, “The essence of these activities is to bring all stakeholders together and harness their resources and capacity to ensure that the fight against GBV is made more impact in our communities.”
The Kaduna state government is the only one in the West African country to adopt such severe punishment for rape. The Czech Republic offers voluntary surgical castration to violent sex offenders and some states in America have legal provisions for chemical castration.
