Keyamo faults Nigeria, Ethiopian airline deal

Image
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has again faulted the agreement the administration of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari signed with Ethiopian Airlines on the proposed national carrier, Nigeria Air. The minister, who briefed State House reporters on Monday after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, said the agreements of the deal were unfair on Nigerian airlines as the deal would create monopoly for Ethiopian Airlines. Keyamo said that reports on the issue had been submitted to President Bola Tinubu who will make a decision on the deal. The minister said he “cannot preempt my President”, adding that “All the reports, everything, we have forwarded to Mr President, the issues we met on the ground.” “But just to say that it would have been irresponsible of me as minister to take over office and close my eyes totally to those concerns. “So because of that, we suspended it to say, let’s just look at all the issues and recommend. However, when summoned in the final stages, he found a priceless goal to seal a win that moved them top of the Premier League table. "It sends a statement out to Manchester City and Liverpool," former Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell said on BBC Radio 5 Live. Reps Urge FG To Expedite Action On Prevention Of Flood Disasters

Image
Image Credit - Robin Ramons The House of Representatives is begging the Federal Government to speed up effort on the prevention of flood disasters in Nigeria, work out a deal to provide relief to flood victims, monitor the management and prevention of flooding, and educate Nigerians on ways to prevent flooding. Following a motion by Honourable Sekav Iyortyom, the House on Thursday recognised that the flooding in the country was attributed to heavy rain and the impact of climate change which deserve urgent, proper planning and proactive actions to prevent damages. The lawmakers are concerned that the prevalence of floods in Nigeria requires urgent attention as delays could result in the destruction of houses and farms, food shortages, and a humanitarian crisis. The House is also mandating its Committee on Water Resources to investigate the release of the N19.2 billion allocated for the devastating impact of flooding on farmlands across the nation. In the last couple of year...

In March, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had said old N200, N500, and N1,000 banknotes would remain legal tender till December 31, 2023. It said the extension of time is necessary and it has not been able to print the volume of new notes that would enable it to phase out old currency before the December 31 order. In the fresh application by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, the Federal Government is seeking the following reliefs: An order of the court reviewing its consequential order contained in the judgment of 3rd March, 2023 to the effect that the old 200, 500 and 1,000 naira notes should be legal tender until the 31st of December, 2023. Also, he noted the lack of adequate security in schools had increased the number of out-of-school children in the country. “It is not cheering news that Africa’s largest economy, the biggest nation in the black world, has a number of out-of-school children that is the highest in all the countries in the world,” he said. He said Nigeria had 13.5 million out-of-school children, ...

UN Chief Calls For 'Dramatic' Action To Limit Climate Change

Image
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for crucial COP28 talks in Dubai to outline “dramatic climate action,” warning that “we’re out of road” on global warming. The UN chief issued his rallying call as the global body warned in a new report that countries’ greenhouse gas-cutting pledges put Earth on track for warming far beyond key limits — possibly up to a catastrophic 2.9 degrees Celsius this century. “Leaders can’t kick the can any further,” Guterres said. “Present trends are racing our planet down a dead-end three-degree temperature rise. In short, the report shows that the emissions gap is more like an emissions canyon. A canyon littered with broken promises, broken lives, and broken records,” he continued. “All of this is a failure of leadership, a betrayal of the vulnerable, and a massive missed opportunity.” The response must “light the fuse to an explosion of ambition in 2025,” he said. “That means national plans with clear 2030 and 2035 targets, that align with 1.5 deg...

They are also seeking a declaration that the National Assembly lacks the vires to legally and constitutionally make any law to regulate and control the operation of lottery in Nigeria.

Boakai was vice president from 2006 to 2018 to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first elected female president, who rebuilt the ravaged country after a civil war left an estimated 250,000 dead. This week’s vote was Boakai’s second run for the top job after he lost to President George Weah in a 2017 run-off. The two faced off again in a second-round vote on Tuesday, following last month’s hard-fought first ballot, in which neither secured an outright victory.
