The Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Dankwara has disapproved the action of a policeman who was seen in a trending video, where a Toyota sienna van used by a team of policemen on patrol rammed over a young man.
In a statement signed by the command's spokesperson, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, the Commissioner of Police described the action of the policeman as barbaric, inhumane and unprofessional.
The Statement disclosed that CP Dankwwra has given a marching order to the Divisional Police Officer, Ekpoma Division to identify and arrest the policeman for further investigation at the State Police Headquarters Benin City.
All officers on the patrol have been arrested, and are currently with the State Criminal Investigation Department , where they are undergoing interrogation.
According to the Statement, preliminary investigations indicate that on the Twenty-ninth of June, 2023, one ASP Magdalene Osayande, reported at Ekpoma Divisional Police Headquarters, Ekpoma, Edo State that while on routine stop and search duty with her team of six policemen along Ihumudumu Road, Ekpoma, intercepted a driver of unregistered Lexus car and demanded for the vehicle particulars.
Along the line, the driver became aggressive and refused to oblige the request of the policemen but rather attacked them, inflicted injuries on them, and destroyed Police vehicle, a development that led to his arrest before one Success Ehimare mistakenly ran into the moving vehicle.
The Statement said the Victim was taken to Irrua Specialist Hospital for treatment, where he is said to be in a stable and good health condition.
The Commissioner of Police assured the public that justice will be served.
Also, The Ag. Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, has condemned the disturbing incident.
The IGP has, therefore, directed the erring policemen, to report to the Force Headquarters Abuja on Monday for further action. Members of the public, particularly the people of Ekpoma, are implored to remain calm.
