Turkey began a planned military offensive into northeastern Syria
Turkey began a premeditated military incursion in northeastern Syria on Wednesday, launching airstrikes and artillery fire across the border just days after the United States of America President announced it was pulling her troops back from the area.
“I don’t want to stay there for the next 40 years," Trump said.
“It’s not going to do anything. ... I campaigned on the fact that I was going to bring our soldiers home, and bring them home as rapidly as possible.” President stated.
The operation is aimed at pushing Kurdish forces according to Turkey.Turkey is reportedly targeting the US-backed Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) — a key US ally in the war against ISIS
Wednesday night, Turkey's Defense Ministry wrote on their verified Twitter account: "The Turkish Armed Forces and the Syrian National Army have launched the land operation into the east of the Euphrates river as part of the Operation Peace Spring."
Meanwhile, Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces have suspended their counter-ISIS operations amid the bombardment in order to focus on the Turkish offensive.
"We will clash against the Turks to not allow them to cross the border. We will use all our possibilities against Turkish aggression," the group's spokesman Mustafa Bali tweeted.
